Seven Top Turnip is a biennial plant and is grown exclusively for its tender greens. Generally planted in the fall for winter harvest, the foliage of this open-pollinated turnip variety is ready for harvest in 45 days after sowing. Seven Top Turnip provides you with a bounty of dark-green leaves about 40 days after the seeds sprout. This variety does not develop an edible root and instead puts all its energy into its lush leaves. Seven Top Turnip is a popular Southern variety grown for unsurpassed flavor of its nutritious greens which are rich in vitamins. 16-22″H large, dark green, tasty leaves are best harvested when young and tender to use in salads as in the Southern classic “Wilted Turnip Salad.” Harvest full size for traditional cooked greens and stir-fries. If eaten raw, the foliage is cut when it attains 6-9 inches height. When cooked, the greens are allowed to grow up to 2 feet in height. Loved as a garden vegetable by home gardeners who cherish “turnip salad.” Excellent freezing variety. Roots tend to be tough, woody and strong flavored – usually considered inedible.
