Knuckle Purplehull Southern Peas (Cowpea) is an open-pollinated, heirloom that matures in 60-65 days. Heavy yielding, brown CROWDER type pea. Known as “Knuckle Hull” because of the big, plump peas! Low bushy plant with 6-9″L pods scattered at foliage level. Pods turn reddish to purple with large seeds that turn brown when dry. Brown-speckled crowders have a stronger flavor than their pink or black-eyed counterparts. Purple flower. Excellent dried and as a canning variety. Approximately 125 seeds per ounce or 2,000 seeds per pound.
**Cowpeas, Southern Peas, are the most productive and heat tolerant legumes around. Cowpeas come in bush, vine, tall and short varieties. Great for stopping soil erosion and weed suppression. Cowpeas make an excellent Nitrogen source ahead of fall-planted crops and attract many beneficial insects. Cowpeas grow well on poor land and add lots of organic matter to the soil. Also, they make a good animal fodder crop.
