Bitter Gourd Long (Oriental Bittermelon) also known as Oriental Gourd (Bitter Long Type) is a vigorous and disease-tolerant plant. This Oriental Gourd produces large, cylindrical, glossy green fruit that grow to 3″ in diameter, 11″ long, and weigh about a pound. Popular in Chinese cuisine. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. In warm areas, sow seeds in spring/summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. For better germination, pre-sprout seeds indoors by soaking in water for 24 hours. Wrap in a wet paper towel and keep warm. Plant when seeds sprout. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation and ease of harvest. The fruit has the best flavor when picked green and is about 11″ long.
